The pinnacle of racing at the end of each swimming season is the National Summer Swimming Championships. Each year swimmers aged 13& Over (age as of 31stDec) competing in the qualifying window, which runs from March-31st May. Aiming to qualify for the National Summer Championships. Swimmers who are ranked in the Top 24 in their assigned competitive age group compete in the British National Championships. This competition includes the fastest swimmers in England, Scotland and Wales. These swimmers travel to Sheffield and compete from 24th-29thJuly. After the Top 24, the next fastest 20 swimmers who are based in England compete in the ASA Home Nations National Championships. This competition only consists of English swimmers, as Scotland and Wales hold their own Championships. These Championships also take place in Sheffield and run from Tuesday 31stJuly until Saturday 4thAugust. During this period, a third National competition takes place. The National Open Water Championships takes place on Monday 31st July. This competition takes place in a lake just outside Sheffield.
I'm sure you will join me in congratulating the four swimmers who have qualified for these National Competitions. They're Aaron Morgan, Ruby Coyle, Alex Coyle and Hazel Macgonigal all taking part in their very first National Championships!
Alex Coyle is our first swimmer to start competing and also our youngest. Alex has qualified for English Nationals in the 50m and 100m butterfly (first event Wednesday 1stAugust). Alex will be competing in the 13/14yr age group. This week Alex will be racing against not only swimmers the same age as him, 13yrs old but swimmers a year old as well. Making tough competition, all that bit harder, Alex will have to raise his game to make finals (top 10 swimmers) but is going in with a strong chance of returning back that evening for finals going in to both events 2ndand 3rdfastest.
Next to compete is Aaron Morgan, Aaron has qualified to compete in the Men’s Open 50m backstroke on Thursday 2ndAugust. As he enters the meet ranked 14th, in a very close field with only 0.8sec covering the fastest to 14th placed swimmer. It will be a very tight competition on the day. Aaron qualified for this event at the London Swimming May Open Meet (Last Chance National Qualifier) ensuring his place at his first National Championships.
On Friday 3rd August Ruby Coyle will be competing in the 200m Butterfly. Ruby qualified for the 200m Fly in the 16 year old age group. This is also Ruby's first year at Nationals and also stands a very strong chance of making the final. With sheer grit and determination on the day in what is classed as one of the toughest races in the programme anything can happen on the day.
Also qualifying at the London Swimming May Open Meet, Hazel Macgonigal, will be competing in the 50m Backstroke on Thursday 2ndAugust. Like Aaron, the field is very tight as is the case with all 50m events at such a high level. But Hazel, going in joint fastest, has a great chance to compete for medals.
Throughout the week I will keep you updated on the swimmers achievements and I am sure you will join me in wishing Aaron, Ruby, Alex and Hazel all the best at the championships, representing the club and giving their all in each event they compete in.
