Borough of Harrow S.C Summer Nationals Report 2018

These 2018 Nationals were really exciting for our swimmers, with 4 athletes qualifying this year. Team Harrow greatly increased the number of athletes achieving the standard required to compete at this seasons Summer Nationals. Here’s a report on how well each of our swimmers did at these events.

 

ALEX COYLE

 

13 years old (Competing in the 13/14 years age group) REGIONAL AGE SQUAD

Alex Coyle

 

Athlete Alex continued his outstanding dominating performance from London Regional Championships into the Swim England Summer Nationals.

 

Following solid attendance and applying a hard work ethic in the training tank during the season, even whilst suffering set backs from old injuries, Alex entered into the spring and summer months in great shape and produced several best times during the qualifying window reducing his time within a year from a 1:06.80 to 1:03.22  for the 100m Fly and from 29.43 to 28.40 for the 50m Fly.

 

Once at Nationals Alex took the opportunity to shine on the big stage. In the heats, a performance time of 1:02.15 in the 100m Fly achieved his first goal of qualifying for a second swim at the Nationals by making it to the final in 3rd place! A very fast final saw Alex finishing 5th place with another great swim and finishing with a new PB time of 1:02.03. This time see’s Alex placed 1st in the 13 year age group by over 1 second!

 

In the 50m event on the last day of English Nationals Alex definitely followed his race plan to go out fast and use all his character to produce an improved performance again and posting a new PB to see him into the evenings final 6th place. In the final Alex proved he had the strength of character to squeeze out a time of 27.89 and a National Final 6th place and again finish top of his age group ranking!

 

HAZEL MACGONIGAL

 

15 years old REGIONAL YOUTH SQUAD

Athlete Hazel continued to make exceptional progress in training and racing throughout the season. Solid attendance in training and shear hard work within those sessions has seen Hazel breaking PB’s nearly every time she has dived into the water!

 

At the London May Level 1 Open Meet Hazel won the 15 years 50 m Backstroke gold medal and managed to rank high enough nationally in her age group to qualify for the same event at English Nationals.

  

At the English National Championships, Hazel again her goal of achieving a National final by posting the fastest qualifying time of 31.04. In the final Hazel showed great strength of character to swim on her PB and finish 5th place. Her time was also a 15 year age group club record.

 

RUBY COYLE

 

16 years old REGIONAL YOUTH SQUAD

Ruby Coyle

 

Athlete Ruby also has had a very consistent attendance throughout the season leading to continual progression in her times and as a result over the season has seen exceptional progression in the 200m butterfly and has seen her PB drop from 2:40.29 to 2:30.74 at London Regional Championships and gain a place in the Summer National Championships .

 

Breaking all 15 years 100/200m Butterfly long and short course club records on the way, Ruby has made every practice session for an unbelievable 10 months, a fantastic achievement at any level. Even during the months leading up to the Summer Nationals carrying a shoulder injury.

 

In her Swim England Nationals heat, Ruby produced a very strong a confident swim. Showing great strength of character finishing 14th in the country.

 

AARON MORGAN

 

21 years old (competing in the 18 years & over age group) REGIONAL YOUTH SQUAD

Athlete Aaron has also had a exceptional season for attitude towards training which has resulted in Middlesex County and London Regional medals also resulting in a PB progression from 28.82 to 27.81 at the London May Open Meet and qualifying for this event at the Summer National Championships and breaking OPEN age group records in this event along the way also.

 

At the English Summer Nationals Aaron produced a strong and resilient swim against the best swimmers in the county. He maintained his stroke rate, and a much-improved leg kick, right through to the finish placing him 13th in the English rankings for the 18yr and over age group and only 0.8sec from the final.

 

A truly outstanding performance form all our National swimmers from the 2017/18 season.
